Crowns & Bridges

Crowns are an ideal way to rebuild teeth which are cracked, have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling and where fillings are not a long term option. The crown fits right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth. Crowns are sometimes also known as ‘caps’.
There are a number of reasons for giving a crown. For instance:

  • The tooth may have been weakened by having a very large filling
  • You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth
  • You may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect it
  • You may have had an accident and damaged the tooth
  • Your crown may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

At Smile Craft Dental we can sometimes fabricate porcelain crowns in one sitting using the very latest CAD/CAM technology.

Bridges

A bridge is a prosthesis used to replace missing teeth, attaching artificial teeth to adjacent natural teeth, called abutment teeth. Fixed bridges are inserted by cementing crowns on the abutment teeth and are a great way to restore your dental health and appearance.

Why It Is Important to Replace Missing Teeth

The loss of teeth may cause muscles to sag and your face to look older. Unusual stresses are placed on the gums and other oral tissues when teeth are missing, causing a number of long-term complications like an increased risk of gum disease, speech disorders, loss of aesthetics, or a change in occlusion (Bite).

A bridge is one way to replace missing teeth. If the teeth are present on either side of the missing tooth or teeth and are healthy and strong, we can provide you with a beautiful bridge to restore your smile. Fixed bridges are typically cemented to the natural teeth next to the space left by the missing tooth. A pontic (false tooth) replaces the lost tooth. Crowns, which are cemented onto the natural teeth, provide support for the bridge. A bridge has the advantage of being fixed, as opposed to having a removable partial denture and brings your dental health to optimal appearance and functionality.

Making Your New Bridge

Your bridge will usually take two appointments to complete. At the first appointment we will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap by removing a portion of the enamel and dentine. Since the bridge must be fabricated very precisely to ensure you can bite your teeth together correctly and to match your remaining teeth, detailed impressions of your teeth are taken. The bridge will be hand crafted in our dental laboratory to our exact specifications, using the highest quality materials.
