Gingival Problems

Your teeth need strong and healthy gums, which is why we take gum health extremely seriously here at Smile Craft Dental. Periodontitis is the main reason why teeth are lost and gingivitis is an early form of this disease.

What Causes Gingivitis and Periodontitis?

Gingival problems like gingivitis and periodontitis occur when a bacterial infection develops at the junction where the gums attach the teeth, called the gingival margin or gum line. Symptoms may include but are not limited to red, swollen, bleeding gums, bad breath, loose teeth and teeth sensitivity.

Harmful bacteria group together to form a complex structure called biofilm and release chemicals that cause inflammation of the gums and periodontal tissue (bone and support structures around the teeth). If left untreated, this inflammation can cause receding gums and bone loss from around the teeth. Advancing gum disease will destroy the supporting structures that hold the teeth into your jaw, causing loose teeth, abscesses and ultimately tooth loss.

Periodontitis Can Affect General Health

Bacteria associated with periodontal disease can also enter into the bloodstream and may result in other adverse health effects and can cause severe infections in other parts of your body, such as your heart and kidneys.

There are multiple research studies that show gum disease has been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, infected orthopedic implants and preterm births. This makes early detection and proper treatment of gum and periodontal diseases critical if you wish to have overall good health.

The best way to prevent gum disease is effective daily brushing and flossing as well as regular professional examinations and cleanings.

Unfortunately, even with the most diligent home dental care, people still can develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.

Other important factors affecting the health of your gums include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition
