Regular check-ups with Smile Craft Dental and great oral care at home are an important part of your preventative dental care plan, but your food choices and even when you eat them can make a big difference to your dental health. Our dentists can advise you on the best foods to eat for dental health and we can provide you with personalised dietary advice.
One of the biggest risks is tooth enamel erosion. Your teeth are protected by a tough layer of tooth enamel but this can be eroded by acid in the mouth. These acids are produced by bacteria that will feed on leftover food particles, particularly those that are sugary or carbohydrate rich, and certain foods are naturally acidic. The presence of acid in the mouth removes essential minerals from your tooth enamel, causing it to become weaker and softer and more vulnerable to erosion. This process is called demineralisation. A while after eating a process called remineralisation occurs and is where some of these minerals are redeposited back into your tooth enamel, reversing some of the damage. If you frequently snack on sugary or highly acidic foods, your teeth will be bathed in acid more frequently, increasing the threat of acid erosion. Making smarter food choices can help to lower this risk.
We can advise you on choosing healthier, tooth-friendly snacks, as well as offering information about which foods are particularly bad for teeth. Unfortunately certain foods that are marketed as being healthy may have high levels of hidden sugars. Being more aware can help reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
