Wisdom teeth are the very last teeth to erupt and can frequently cause problems. If your wisdom teeth have yet to make an appearance, we will monitor them very closely using digital dental x-rays. If we can see they are unable to come through without problems, we will suggest you have them removed.
The main problem with wisdom teeth is that they will often try to erupt into a jaw that is already full of teeth. If there is insufficient room for your wisdom teeth, they might try to come through underneath existing teeth, or will even try to push sideways through your gums. These teeth are said to be impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can also cause cysts. Wisdom teeth may partially erupt, remaining partly covered by a flap of gum tissue. This makes these teeth extremely difficult to keep clean and they can become infected or decayed.
Our dentist will carefully assess the position of your wisdom teeth using dental x-rays, as we can carry out straightforward removals here at Smile Craft Dental using local anaesthetic. We may choose to refer more complex wisdom tooth removals to an oral surgeon who can remove them in a hospital setting under a local or general anaesthetic. The procedure to remove wisdom teeth is
quite quick, as often they will be cut into smaller sections to make their removal easier and more comfortable.
Afterwards, we will provide you with lots of information on how to care for your mouth while the extraction sites heal. It is normal to experience mild discomfort and some swelling after having these teeth removed, but healing should be quick and uneventful.
