What to do in a Dental Emergency

It can be very overwhelming to handle a dental emergency. The most important thing to remember is not to panic. We listed a few tips to help you in a dental emergency and can offer additional advice over the phone until you can get to see us.

1. Tooth Knocked Out

If your tooth is knocked out in an accident, please follow these steps:

  • Find the tooth.
  • Gently rinse your tooth with milk or saline and ensure that you do not scrub the root as this may cause damage or remove the tissues on root which are important for reattachment.
  • Once rinsed, try gently placing the tooth back into the person’s socket if you can. If this cannot be accomplished, then place the tooth in a small cup of milk or the person’s saliva.
  • Come to us immediately as re-implantation is much more successful when carried out the first half an hour to an hour after the accident.

2. Experiencing Toothache

If you have toothache, then try rinsing the mouth with warm (but not hot) water, which will provide temporary relief from pain and gum problems.
Keep the tooth clean and contact us as soon as possible.
You should not put any pain killers directly on the gums as this can lead to the burning of gum tissue.

3. Broken or damaged Jaw

Injuries to the jaw can be serious require immediate action.
You can either come to our practice immediately for us to arrange an appropriate referral or alternatively go directly to the emergency room at your nearest hospital.

4. Trauma

Teeth can fracture or displace due to trauma and need urgent attention to increase the chances of saving them. Trauma also means the dental nerves are exposed and can cause significant pain if they come in contact with the air.

We keep emergency appointments for these unforeseen problems. Definitive treatment can be provided after a full mouth examination where we can discuss your options and secure your dental health for the long term.
